Job Summary


Under primary supervision of the Director of Undergraduate Retention Programs, and dotted-line reporting to the Director of Advising and Policy regarding matters relating to Academic Advising and Data Analysis and Assessment, the retention specialist will support student success and retention for a cohort of students, including those experiencing academic difficulty or having indicators predictive of poor academic performance (for example, those on academic probation, subject to academic disqualification, with low math-placement scores, or with low grades in math and science courses during their first year of enrollment at UC Davis); provide comprehensive and wide-ranging academic advising and support for undergraduate students in the College of Engineering; serve as expert resource for and provide leadership to departmental academic advisors on a wide variety of policy implementation guidelines; provide advice and guidance to the chairs and members of college faculty governance committees and other campus units; collaborate closely with appropriate personnel in other campus units; ensure ongoing, individual and holistic advising for students to develop a strong foundation for retention and academic success through graduation; interpret and apply complex Academic Senate, college and campus academic and administrative regulations and policies associated broadly with undergraduate education and advising; make decisions under the direction of the Associate Dean on academic intervention, dismissal and readmission and in consultation with the Associate Dean, the Director of Advising and Policy and college faculty, when appropriate, on course planning and scheduling, schedule adjustments and other similar academic matters; collaborate with the Associate Dean and Directors in office planning and the development of office policies and procedures designed to optimize the delivery of advising and academic support services; represent the college at public forums and respond on behalf of the college to inquiries or complaints from the general public. Qualifications Minimum QualificationsFor full consideration, applicants are encouraged to upload license, certification and/or educational degree if required of the position.

Master's degree in STEM field, academic advising, counseling, higher education leadership, student services, or related field; or an equivalent combination of education and experience, including a bachelor's degree from an accredited college or university.Experience advising students in a university setting.Experience identifying and determining appropriate level of advising or referral services for individual students, providing immediate crisis counseling, triage, and referrals to students in academic, financial, or personal difficulty.Experience with computer software for word-processing, spreadsheet, and database applications to perform standard computer-based activities such as recording accurate and complete messages in student files, and preparing correspondence, documents, and reports.Knowledge of diverse cultural backgrounds and sensitivity to social, educational and cultural needs and concerns of students who are first-generation, low-income, underrepresented or from non-traditional backgrounds.Excellent written and oral communication skills. Interpersonal communication skills and political acumen to build and maintain professional collaborative working relationships, and to work effectively at all levels and with all constituencies.Knowledge of State and Federal Laws governing confidentiality of student records.Preferred Qualifications

75% - UNDERGRADUATE ACADEMIC ADVISING20% - DATA ANALYSIS AND ASSESSMENT5% - OTHER DUTIESDepartment OverviewEUO has overall responsibility for the design, development, and implementation of administrative procedures for the degree-granting programs in COE as specified by the faculty, as well as outreach, recruitment, diversity, retention, and other student-support activities. This includes the design and delivery of academic advising and educational enhancement programs for students; serving as a primary information resource for students, faculty, staff, and the general public; interpreting, analyzing, and implementing a wide variety of Academic Senate regulations and administrative policies in evaluating student petitions, assessing individual academic performance, and progress toward satisfaction of degree requirements; making decisions on academic disqualification from the University and readmission; analyzing and authorizing baccalaureate degree certification; assisting the undergraduate degree programs with assessment efforts for ABET accreditation and coordinating those efforts; and consulting for and coordinating the operation of the faculty governance system of COE. EUO monitors the progress and advises a specific group of students from matriculation through graduation.The unit also creates and supports programs designed to increase persistence and retention among first-generation and women undergraduates and those from traditionally under- represented backgrounds (including the LEADR and AvenueE programs). EUO has primary responsibility for creating strategy and managing implementation of all undergraduate outreach and recruitment activities, as well as student-oriented events. The unit's scope of responsibility is college-wide, extending to the departments administered by the college.Position Information
